CONTEXTUALIZING COERCIVE CONTROL FOR SYSTEMIC TRANSFORMATION
RESEARCH & THEORY IN COERCIVE CONTROL & UNDUE INFLUENCE
Research in coercive control began in the fifties. The term brainwashing was coined by Edward Hunter. Brainwashing concepts spurred research, and Robert Lifton & Albert Biderman conducted thought reform & coercive control research on prisoners where the tactics of coercion were used to increase compliance. The term coercive control was coined by Susan Schechter in 1982, and Evan Stark popularized the term coercive control in his 2007 book entitled Coercive Control. This page includes research and theory relevant to coercive control within domestic abuse, domestic violence, human trafficking, cults, and extremism, including family courts and child custody.
